Agape and catechesis – The 12th Sunday after Pentecost
On this day, the following are commemorated: Saint Lupus the Martyr, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, Saint Irenaeus the Holy Martyr, Bishop of Lugdunum, the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God of Mega Spileo (Megalospilaiotissa), Saint Calinic, Patriarch of Constantinople, the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God “Panaghia Xenia,” and the 12th Sunday after Pentecost (The Rich Young Man).
The 12th Sunday after Pentecost presents us with the Gospel of the Rich Young Man, in which our Savior Jesus Christ reveals to us that true wealth does not lie in the transitory possessions of this world, but in communion with God and in attaining eternal life. The young man’s desire to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven is commendable, yet his attachment to his wealth prevents him from fully responding to Christ’s call, showing how easily material possessions can become an obstacle to salvation.
Through this Gospel, the Lord teaches us that the fulfillment of the commandments must be accompanied by a heart free from passions and a willingness to put God above all else. Wealth is not condemned in and of itself, but rather the disordered love of it, which can enslave the soul and turn it away from the true values of life. Christ calls us to use the gifts we have received wisely, to be merciful, and to seek first the Kingdom of God.
This Sunday calls on us to examine our hearts, to let go of everything that distances us from Christ, and to cultivate faith, mercy, and generosity. By following the teachings of the Gospel, we can discover true freedom and the joy of a life lived in love, humility, and complete trust in God’s providence.
We warmly welcome you to the Chapel of the Saint Thecla Foundation, in a warm and welcoming setting!
