Holy Liturgy – Saint Pulcheria the Empress

On this day, the following are celebrated: the Veneration of the Holy Cross, Saint Pulcheria the Empress, and the Holy Martyrs Minodora, Mitrodora, and Nymphodora.

Saint Pulcheria the Empress is honored by the Church as a model of faith, wisdom, and dedication to the defense of the true faith. Living in a time when the Church faced numerous controversies and trials, she placed the power and responsibility she held in the service of God and the Church, supporting Christian life and defending Orthodox teaching. Through self-control, prayer, and love for the sacred, Saint Pulcheria demonstrated that true authority is that which is placed in the service of the common good and of one’s neighbor.

Her example urges us not to separate faith from the responsibilities of daily life and to use the gifts, position, and power we receive to do good, to defend the truth, and to support those in need. In her, we see the image of a person who understood that true greatness is attained through humility, faith, and service. In the Orthodox calendar, Saint Pulcheria is commemorated on September 10.
