Holy Liturgy – St. Martyr Ilarion Felea

On this day, we commemorate: Saint Ilarion Felea, Priest and Martyr; Saint Eumenios, Hierarch and Bishop of Gortyna; Saint Ilarion of Optina; Saint Castor, Martyr; Saint Ariadna, Martyr; the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God “The Healer” (The Healer), and the Holy Venerable Romil of Ravanița.

Saint Ilarion Felea, Priest and Martyr, is one of the great confessors of the Romanian Orthodox faith in the 20th century—a theologian, professor, spiritual father, and fearless defender of the truth of the Gospel. Born into a family of priests, he dedicated his life to serving the Church, educating young people, and deepening his understanding of theology, becoming a beloved professor and spiritual father sought out by many believers. For him, theology was not merely an academic discipline, but a calling to prayer, witness, asceticism, and an authentic Christian life.

With the establishment of the communist regime, Saint Hilarion was arrested and imprisoned repeatedly for his faith and his activities. In the Aiud prison, he continued to bear witness to Christ, despite suffering, hunger, illness, and persecution, transforming even his cell into a place of prayer and witness. He passed away in 1961 at the Aiud prison, and his life and death became a powerful testimony of faithfulness to Christ.

Honoring Saint Ilarion Felea urges us not to be ashamed of our faith and to remain steadfast in the truth even when we face hardships. He reminds us that serving God requires courage, responsibility, and sacrifice, and that true human freedom is found in faithfulness to Christ.
