Holy Liturgy – St. Theodora of Sihla
On this day we commemorate: Saint Paphnutius the Pious—Pârvu the Iconographer, Saint Theodora the Pious of Sihla, the Afterfeast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Saint Anthony of Optina, Saint Dometius the Persian, the Pious Martyr, Saint Nicanor the Pious, Saint Irene, Empress, Saint Narcissus the Holy Martyr, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God of Valaam.
Saint Theodora of Sihla, commemorated by the Church on August 7, is one of the most beloved saints of the Romanian people, a perfect model of prayer, humility, and asceticism. Desiring from her youth to devote her entire life to God, she chose the monastic path, and in times of trial she withdrew to the Neamț Mountains, where she lived in solitude, prayer, and strict fasting in the cave at Sihla that bears her name to this day.
Amid the tranquility of the forests and cliffs, Saint Theodora spent many years in asceticism, sustained by God’s providence and attaining a high level of spiritual life. Her life was marked by humility, patience, and complete trust in God’s will, becoming a beacon for monks and for all believers seeking the path to holiness. The discovery of her holy relics strengthened the piety of the Orthodox faithful, and her veneration spread throughout the entire Romanian Orthodox Church.
The example of the Holy Pious Theodora of Sihla urges us to seek first the kingdom of God, to cherish prayer, peace of mind, and a pure life, and to face life’s trials with patience, placing unwavering hope in God’s help and mercy. Through her intercession, we ask the Lord to grant us peace, strength in faith, and spiritual growth on the path to salvation.
We warmly welcome you to the Chapel of the Saint Thecla Foundation, in a warm and welcoming setting!
