Vespers – The Eve of the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God

On this day, the following are celebrated: the Forefeast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, Saint Micah the Prophet, the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God “the Counselor,” and the Veneration of the Holy Icon of the Mother of God of Narva.

The Forefeast of the Dormition of the Mother of God prepares the souls of the faithful to welcome one of the greatest feasts dedicated to the Most Holy Mother of God. During these days of preparation, the Church urges us to look with reverence upon the life of the Mother of God, the perfect model of humility, obedience, and complete self-surrender to God’s will. Through prayer, fasting, and participation in the Holy Mysteries, we are called to renew ourselves spiritually and prepare to honor her passing into heavenly life as is fitting.

The Dormition of the Mother of God is not a feast of sorrow, but of hope and of life’s victory over death. Just as her Son conquered death through the Resurrection, so too is the Most Holy Virgin gloriously taken up into the Kingdom of God, becoming for all believers an unceasing intercessor and a loving protector. The example of her life teaches us that true greatness is attained through humility, purity of heart, and obedience to God.

This period of preparation for the feast urges us to deepen our prayer, to cultivate peace, love, and charity, and to place all our hope in the intercession of the Mother of God. As we prepare with a pure heart for the great feast of her Dormition, we strengthen our faith and confidence that the Mother of God remains ever close to those who call upon her with devotion and love.
